Placement of Hazardous Placards - Rail Containers

Placement of Hazardous Placards - Rail Containers

In order to ensure visibility during the transportation of containers in double stack cars, all hazardous placards and/or UN/NA identification number markings and "marine pollutant" markings must be located in the area that is at least one (1) foot from the top of the container, four (4) feet from the bottom and at least five (5) feet from the end of the container to ensure visibility. End placards must be located with the same height restrictions.

All hazardous units are required to display appropriate placards, labels, markings, UN/NA numbers and commodity labels in accordance to 49 CFR while maintaining the proper positioning as stated above.

Please also note that the placards, labels, markings, etc. must match the waybill information on file with the railroad. Placards not meeting these conditions must be removed and replaced per the placement requirements.
