Q: What is the difference between shipline demurrage and terminal demurrage?
A: Terminal demurrage is a charge issued to the shipline when a loaded container exceeds the free time allotted at the terminal as provided for in the VIT Schedule of Rates (SOR). Shipline demurrage is a charge issued by the shipline to their customers at the end of free time as provided in their tariff or service agreement. (Sometimes referred as storage).
Q: Will I receive an invoice from VIT for terminal demurrage charges?
A: This is a shipline charge only, per the VIT Schedule of Rates Item 456, “Free Time-Container”.
Q: Did I have to pay both Shipline and Terminal demurrage charges?
A: Please contact your shipline for any demurrage charges that may be issued.
Q: Can I pay the terminal for terminal demurrage charges if the shipline instructs me to pay?
Some shiplines at our VIG facility will allow terminal demurrage to be paid online through our LYNX system. Credit card only payments are permitted. The shiplines that allow payment of terminal demurrage are: ACL,APL, China Shipping, CMA-CGM, Hyundai, K-Line, MOL and Turkon. Please contact all other shiplines directly for terminal demurrage payment instructions.
Q: Can I pay the terminal for shipline demurrage charges?
A: At this time, shipline demurrage can only be paid for Evergreen, CMA, and China Shipping at the VIG terminal using LYNX. Please contact all other shiplines directly for shipline demurrage payment instructions.
Q: What is the first available date that I can bring in a export container to the terminal before demurrage will start?
Please contact your shipline for this information. VIT does have an Early Return Date (ERD) policy in effect. For the early return date of a scheduled vessel, please use the following link http://www.vit.org/WebReports/vesselschedule.aspx.
Export containers can not be delivered before the ERD.
